Eating Disorders

An unhealthy relationship with body image can deeply affect how we see ourselves. The pressure to look a certain way can lead to significant dissatisfaction with the way we look, and this can impact us in many complex ways. What begins as a diet or calorie restriction can sometimes turn into an eating disorder, a complicated mental health condition that compromises one’s physical and emotional well-being. At Trisha Johnson Therapy Group, we understand how isolating and painful this struggle can be. Our mission is to offer a non-judgmental space for individuals as they progress to recovery from their eating disorder.

What Are Eating Disorders?

An eating disorder is a complex mental health condition that affects an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors toward food, eating and body image. These disorders are not just about food—they often stem from a combination of biological, emotional, environmental and social factors. Experiences such as low self-esteem, trauma, societal pressure or a desire for control might contribute to the development of patterns that are harmful to both physical and emotional health.

Types of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders come in many forms, but some of the most common include:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight, individuals with anorexia may severely restrict their food intake, engage in excessive exercise or use other methods to maintain a dangerously low body weight.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: This involves cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging, fasting or overexercising.
  • Binge Eating Disorder: Individuals struggling with this condition frequently eat excessive amounts of food in a short period, often feeling out of control during these episodes, without purging afterward.
  • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED): This includes disordered eating patterns that do not fit neatly into the categories above but still severely disrupt a person’s mental and physical health.

Though eating disorders take different forms, they share one common thread—they can cause deep emotional distress and create significant health complications without proper treatment.

How Therapy Can Help

Seeking therapy is one of the most effective ways to address eating disorders. At Trisha Johnson Therapy Group, we believe that recovery is possible with the right support. Therapy provides a safe, nurturing space to explore your relationship with food, emotions and self-image.

Approaches to Treatment

We use evidence-based methods tailored to each individual’s unique needs. Common approaches include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This method focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors related to food and body image.
  • Family-Based Treatment (FBT): Especially helpful for children and adolescents, this approach involves family members in supporting healthy eating habits.
  • Holistic Approaches: Techniques like mindfulness, meditation and emotion regulation exercises foster long-term wellness.

During therapy, you can expect honest and confidential discussions about your experiences surrounding food, body image and emotions. Our kind, experienced therapists will guide you toward creating healthier behaviors and thought patterns, setting the foundation for long-term emotional and physical well-being.
